The client farm is a growing piggery and cattle enterprise currently keeping 38 sows, with a strategic plan to scale up to 50 sows and a maximum capacity of 400 pigs. With this growth comes a significant opportunity to turn waste management challenges into a sustainable energy solution.
Our proposed biodigester will utilize pig manure as the primary feedstock to generate biogas for clean, uninterrupted cooking.
Assessment Findings
During the visit, our team made the following observations:1. Farm Capacity: A well-managed piggery with clear expansion plans to 400 pigs.
Based on energy needs and future growth, our engineers have proposed two viable options:
Option 1: 50m³ Biodigester – Our Recommended Standard Commercial Size
This is our flagship first-commercial size, designed for farms that are planning to grow. It will reliably supply continuous cooking gas for the main household and provide excess gas for future use in brooding pens. Ideal for:
Up to 400 pigs | Daily Feedstock of 450kg to 600kg of pig/cow waste | Gas Output of 25 to 30 cubic meters per day
Option 2: 40m³ Biodigester – Pre-Commercial Size
A cost-effective solution tailored for current farm operations. Ideal for:
Up to 250 pigs | Daily Feedstock of 300kg to 400kg | Gas Output of 20 to 25 cubic meters per day – Enough to run a 4-plate gas cooker for all daily household cooking.
The Future is Biogas. This Kitwe project is another testament to the growing demand for sustainable waste-to-energy solutions on the Copperbelt. By converting pig & cow waste into biogas, the farm will not only eliminate fuel costs and reduce its environmental footprint but also produce nutrient-rich bio-slurry for its fields.
Construction is set to begin soon. Stay tuned for updates!
